Workflow: Task Automation For iOS

Working as a Solutions Consultant, I can be constantly on the road traveling to and from meetings and networking events. Being away from my desktop has led me to look for creative mobile solutions to the many tasks I would normal do in the office.  Enter Workflow, a powerful automation tool made for iOS and watchOS. What this app does is it allows users to drag and drop any combination of tasks to create productive workflows for iOS devices. It allows users to perform a number of steps from an individual tap.

The app comes with over 200 actions that work with Apple’s native apps and few third party apps such as Dropbox, Evernote, Ulysses, and WordPress to name a few. Some of the examples of workflows that they list are:

  • Make animated GIFs
  • Add a home screen icon that calls a loved one
  • Make PDFs from Safari or any app with a share sheet
  • Get directions to the nearest coffee shop in one tap
  • Tweet the song you’re listening to
  • Get all of the images on a web page
  • Send a message including the last screenshot you took

In the app, they have a gallery that has user submitted workflows that you can add to you library of workflows. Launching a workflow can be done just about anywhere inside of iOS. Users can create a standalone app on your home screen, add a workflow to your widgets page, or use Apple’s 3D touch from the app. Workflows are also able to be launched inside supported apps. Workflow’s Action Extension is able to pull and dump data, control media, and transform data as you see fit.

The value for me comes from being able to automate task on the road that would normal take up important office time. From taking my notes from network assessments, client meetings, or meetups and being able to document them and send them to co-workers. As well as helps me with time management. Being able to get directions to my next calendar event saves me time on the back end from having to manually type in addresses for every meeting. It is also convenient to have a workflow that will help find the closest coffee shop and give me directions in an unfamiliar area. The flexibility this app gives its users helps make their daily routines more efficient.
